Gender Roles

VagabUndo delivered the following questionnaire to ten teenagers, in order to study the gender patterns in the portuguese society:

1. Who does what?

The majority of people said that both genders cook, clean the kitchen, do the dishwasher and are in charge of buying groceries.
When it comes to clean the house, tidy the bedroom, take care of the laundry and ironing, women are the only one's to do such chores. On the other hand, both genders are pointed as responsible for the household maintenance.
Both genders drive the car and take care of pets.

Men are in charge of the car maintenance and DIY (do it yourself) jobs.

2. Criteria for the division of tasks at home
Regarding the division of tasks at home, two aspects were pointed out: the fact that women in Portugal have always been linked to housework and were victims of discrimination for many years, and the time each one has available.

3. Who is in charge of the finances of the household?
The mother is in charge of the finnances of the household.

4. Who do you have to ask permission to? (when going out or buying something)
The majority said both, but the father has the last word.

5. Do you consider that the division of tasks in your family reflects the reality in your country?
The majority agrees that in the portuguese homes women remain in charge of all the housework, not sharing the burden with their husbands. Half the teenagers said this reality is reflected in their home, and the other half said the opposite.

6. Who comes home from work first, and who spends more time at home?
The woman spends more time at home and comes from work first.

  1. Hello Portugal!
very interesting to read about you. It's almost the same as in out country but there are some little differences. the man does in the netherlands also the DIY jobs. But they have equal jobs. They earn almost the same. In general the man earns a little bit more than the woman but that is changing. we are curious about the kids. Have they to do something in the houskeeping? Have they to work? Are they rude? Do they want to get a high grade? (in our country the most of us are satisfied with an average mark)
can't wait to hear from you,
greets from group 1, the Netherlands

  2. Wow, a more old fashioned result here.

I wanted to ask, ok so women do the household chores and men do the DIY (house maintenance) but do the men really do their part? When the house needs painting do they do it or pay for a professional to paint it??

Women are in charge of the finances? That is interesting (I am sure Isabel agrees but Carlos might not...)

I would ask you to think about one thing, what about your own opinion on these things? Do you think the roles you have described here will be the roles you will follow in your own future? girls do you all want to take charge of all the housework whilst your husband only changes a light bulb every two months?
